Botox in aesthetic medicine

For many years, aesthetic medicine has offered us the opportunity to improve our external appearance, not only when it is indicated (e.g. as a result of an illness or accident), but also when we want to improve our appearance. Treatments in the field of aesthetic medicine allow us to fight the first signs of aging of our skin, i.e. wrinkles, and one of the most popular treatments is, of course, injecting the face with botulinum toxin. But what is the mentioned toxin, what does the treatment with the use of this preparation look like and can this treatment cause any side effects?

What is botox?

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin or botulism, is a substance that is produced by the anaerobic Bacillus botulinus bacteria. We can find it, for example, in perishable sausages and cold cuts and in this form (through consumption) it poses a serious threat to our health. The situation is slightly different when it comes to injecting botulinum toxin into specific parts of our face, because in small amounts it does not pose any threat to us, on the contrary, it can significantly improve the appearance of our skin.

The use of botox in aesthetic medicine

In aesthetic medicine, botox is used not only to fight wrinkles, but also to drooping mouth corners and excessive sweating. When it comes to wrinkles, the aforementioned toxin can effectively deal with such defects as crow’s feet, lion’s wrinkles, transverse wrinkles, as well as wrinkles located around our mouth.

When is it worth using botox?

Mimic wrinkles may appear on our face at different ages, but only after reaching the age of 40 they become more and more visible and harder to remove with the help of cosmetics and minimally invasive treatments   . For this reason, the aforementioned treatment in the field of aesthetic medicine is recommended in particular to women who are at least 40 years of age, but everything depends mainly on the daily care of the skin, as well as its general condition.

How should I prepare for the procedure?

During the first visit to an aesthetic medicine office, the doctor conducts a thorough interview with the patient in order to exclude any contraindications to the procedure, and to take a better look at the skin. No additional tests are required before the procedure, and if inflammation occurs, it must be healed. When it comes to earlier preparation for the procedure, remember not to take any painkillers and antipyretics that contain substances that thin the blood (this may result in bruising after the procedure).

What does the procedure look like?

Before starting the treatment, the doctor disinfects and degreases the skin with an alcohol-free preparation. The use of anesthesia for this procedure in the field of aesthetic medicine is rather not advisable, because the injection of needles is not too painful (they resemble a mosquito bite), therefore applying ice is sufficient in this case. When everything is prepared, the specialist proceeds to the procedure. In the case of wrinkles located on the lower eyelids, the substance is injected in two places on each of them. When it comes to crow’s feet, it is necessary to inject the skin in three places on each side, while in the forehead area, butulin toxin is most often applied in as many as eight places.

After the treatment, the skin may be a bit swollen and bruises may appear on it, but this can be avoided by applying an ointment with vitamin K (you can also cool the skin with ice). For the first few days after the procedure, you should strictly follow the doctor’s instructions, which means that you should not expose your skin to extreme temperatures (sauna, solarium), and avoid alcohol consumption. As for the effects of the treatment, they are most noticeable after 7-14 days and last for about 6 months. also avoiding alcohol consumption. Side effects related to botox injection

Botox applied in reasonable doses is completely safe for us and in the last few decades there have been no side effects of this substance, which have been confirmed by some clinical trials. Immediately after the treatment, however, you should take into account that the face may appear slightly swollen, bruised, and reddened skin, which should completely disappear within a few hours. Regardless of whether any side effects of botox injection have been reported at one time, specialists warn against the procedure about possible side effects such as drooping eyelids, weakening of the facial muscles or headache (however, do not be afraid of them, because they appear relatively rarely).
